Tau Dance Theater (TDT) is the only professional dance company founded by a native Hawaiian based in Honolulu. Established in 1996 by Artistic Director Peter Rockford Espiritu, TDT has produced original epic works to critical acclaim. Pōhuli is the term that Tau Dance Theater has coined, identifying its signature dance style that respectfully fuses hula, modern dance and ballet. The creation of this unique hybrid is one of their many contributions to the evolutionary movement language of our global village.
TDT’s performance is named Indigenuity, which aims to bring together Native Hawaiian and Native American cultures. Guest artists for this performance include:
-
Pōmaika'i: a popular Native Hawaiian musician, a former Mrs. Hawai’i, an educator, administrator, event producer and the granddaughter of Hawaiian music legend Aunty Genoa Keawe
-
Shelley Morningsong: (Northern Cheyenne) the 2019 Native American Music Awards Artist of the Year, Singer, Songwriter and Grammy Member
-
Fabian Fontenelle: (Zuni/Omaha) the 2019 & 2022 First Place Men’s Traditional Dance winner at the “Gathering of Nations.” Fabian is also an original member of the American Indian Dance Theater.
-
Kealoha Kelekolio: former longtime cultural educator at the Bishop Museum in Hawaii, master storyteller and sharer of Hawaiian culture at the ‘Aulani, a Disney Resort, and with Tau Dance Theater
